Legal notice

This is an English translation provided for convenience. The site is published from France and governed by French law: in the event of any discrepancy, the French version prevails.

The host stores the content and makes it technically available. It plays no editorial role and cannot be held responsible for what is published.
3. Terms of use
Using the site means accepting these terms without reservation. They may change at any time; the version that applies is the one online at the time of the visit.
Users undertake not to disrupt the operation of the site, in particular through mass automated extraction, attempted unauthorised access, code injection or deliberate server overload.
4. Services and limitations
Synth News provides news and analysis about synthesizers and electronic music production: hardware, modular, software and sound design. Access is free and requires no registration.
Information published is deemed accurate as at its publication date. It is not professional advice, an individual recommendation or a guarantee of any outcome. The publisher aims to keep the site available at all times but is not obliged to: access may be interrupted for maintenance, technical incident or force majeure.
5. Technical limitations
The site uses standard web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and is optimised for recent versions of the main browsers. Users acknowledge that they have the skills and equipment needed to access it.
The publisher cannot be held liable for hardware or software damage arising from use of the site, in particular from an incompatible configuration or a virus present on the user’s equipment.
6. Intellectual property
Everything on the site — text, images, illustrations, graphic elements, structure, source code, name and logo — is protected by copyright and trade mark law. Any reproduction or representation, in whole or in part, without prior written permission is an infringement punishable under articles L.335-2 et seq. of the French Intellectual Property Code.
Short quotation remains permitted: a brief excerpt, quotation marks, the name Synth News and a link to the original page. This applies to human reuse and to automated systems alike, including for model training; the absence of a technical blocking mechanism is not permission.
Visuals supplied by third parties (press services, agencies, rights holders) remain the property of their authors and are used for editorial illustration. Unless stated otherwise, the images illustrating articles on this site are used to illustrate the news. The source is given where the originating site expressly claims ownership of the content distributed. Where no rights holder can be identified at the time of publication, the notice “Rights reserved (DR)” is used: the rights in those images remain entirely those of their respective owners, including where the owner has not made themselves known. Any rights holder who considers that publication of an image harms them may obtain its immediate removal on simple request through the contact form, without prejudice to any other rights they may have.
7. Limitation of liability
The publisher cannot be held liable for direct or indirect damage resulting from access to the site or from use of the information it contains.
The site links to external resources. The publisher has no control over them and accepts no responsibility for their content, their availability or their personal-data practices.
Any spaces opened to user contributions are moderated after publication. Unlawful content can be reported through the contact form and will be removed promptly once checked.
8. Personal data and cookies
How personal data is processed, how consent is managed and which cookies are set are described below. This section forms an integral part of this legal notice.
8.1 Data controller
The data controller is Simon Janvier – Mail Studio, 54 rue Sadi Carnot, 49300 Cholet, France. Any request about your data can be sent through the contact form or by post to that address. The publisher has not appointed a data protection officer: neither the nature nor the volume of the processing carried out requires one within the meaning of article 37 GDPR.
8.2 Data collected
Browsing. Each visit generates technical data sent by your browser: IP address, browser type and version, operating system, page viewed, referring page, date and time. This data appears in the server logs.
Contact form. The fields of the form — name, email address, subject and message — are transmitted so that your request can be handled. Optional fields are identified as such; the others are needed in order to reply.
No special category data. The site does not knowingly collect data falling under article 9 GDPR (origin, opinions, health, sexual orientation, beliefs). Please do not include any in your messages.
8.3 Purposes and legal bases
| Processing | Purpose | Legal basis |
|---|---|---|
| Server logs | Security, abuse prevention, technical diagnosis | Legitimate interests (art. 6.1.f) |
| Contact form | Answering your request | Legitimate interests, or pre-contractual steps (art. 6.1.b) |
| Audience measurement | Understanding traffic and improving the site | Consent (art. 6.1.a) |
| Advertising and personalisation | Funding the site through advertising | Consent (art. 6.1.a) |
| Statutory retention | Responding to a judicial request | Legal obligation (art. 6.1.c) |
8.4 Recipients
Data is neither sold nor rented. It is accessible to the publisher and, strictly within the scope of their work, to the following providers:
- Host — OVH SAS, storing the site and making it available.
- Delivery and security — Cloudflare, Inc., a network placed in front of the server: it delivers the pages and filters attacks, and therefore sees the IP address and headers of every request. It sets no analytics or advertising cookie.
- Email — the host’s mail server (OVH), delivering messages sent through the form.
- Advertising network — none at this stage. The site plans to display advertising, not yet in service; this page will be updated before it goes live.
- Audience measurement — no tool is active at this stage. This page will be updated as soon as a traffic-statistics tool is in service.
Data may also be disclosed to the competent authorities upon lawful request.
8.5 Retention periods
| Data | Period |
|---|---|
| Connection logs | 12 months (article L.34-1 of the French Postal and Electronic Communications Code) |
| Messages received through the form | 3 years after the last exchange |
| Audience-measurement cookies | 13 months maximum |
| Proof of consent | 6 months from collection |
8.6 Cookies and trackers
A cookie is a small file placed on your device when you visit. The site uses three kinds:
- Strictly necessary — running the site and remembering your consent choices. Set without consent, in accordance with article 82 of the French Data Protection Act.
- Audience measurement — traffic statistics. Subject to your consent, except in configurations exempted under CNIL guidance.
- Advertising and personalisation — selecting and measuring ads, including by third parties. Subject to your consent.
No non-essential cookie is set before you have made a choice. Refusing is as easy as accepting, and refusing does not prevent you from reading the site.
Audience measurement is provided by Google Analytics 4. If you accept it, two cookies are set by this site: _ga and _ga_XHK5KYPGF9, kept for thirteen months. They are used to tell visitors apart and to measure sessions; they are not used for personalised advertising or for matching across sites.
8.7 Advertising and consent management
Consent is collected through the banner shown on your first visit. It offers accepting and refusing all non-essential cookies at the same level, and gives access to detailed settings by purpose.
Your choice is stored in a cookie on your device, with its date and the version of the list of purposes; it is passed to the scripts concerned, which load only once consent has been given. You can change or withdraw it at any time through the “Cookies” link in the footer; withdrawal applies going forward and does not affect the lawfulness of earlier processing.
Content embedded from third-party services — YouTube videos in particular — is not loaded until you activate it: a thumbnail served by the site stands in for it, and no request reaches the third-party service before you click. At this stage no advertising network operates on the site: the banner’s “Advertising” purpose has no effect as long as no ads are served, and this page will be updated before a network is introduced. Links to the retailer Thomann are plain outbound links with no tracking parameter; once on its site, its own terms apply.
8.8 Your rights
You have the following rights over data concerning you: access, rectification, erasure (subject to our legal obligations), restriction of processing, objection to processing based on legitimate interests, portability, withdrawal of consent at any time, and the right to set directives on what happens to your data after your death.
These rights are exercised through the contact form or by post. We reply within one month, extendable by two months for a complex request. Proof of identity may be requested where there is reasonable doubt about who you are.
If a disagreement persists, you can refer the matter to the CNIL, the French data protection authority — 3 place de Fontenoy, TSA 80715, 75334 Paris Cedex 07 — or complain online at cnil.fr. If you live in another EU or EEA country, you may instead contact your own supervisory authority.
8.9 Transfers outside the European Union
Some providers, advertising providers in particular, may process data outside the European Union. Such transfers rely on a European Commission adequacy decision or, failing that, on standard contractual clauses together with supplementary measures. One provider is concerned: Cloudflare, for the delivery and security of the site. Cloudflare, Inc. is certified under the EU–US Data Privacy Framework, which the European Commission found adequate on 10 July 2023. Neither an advertising network nor an audience-measurement tool is in service on the site, which is itself hosted in France.
8.10 Security
The site is served over HTTPS. Administrative access is restricted and logged, software components are kept up to date and regular backups are taken. As no measure guarantees absolute security, a data breach presenting a risk to your rights would be notified to you in accordance with articles 33 and 34 GDPR.
8.11 Minors
The site is not aimed at children under fifteen and does not knowingly collect their data. A parent or guardian who becomes aware of such collection can request its deletion through the contact form.
8.12 Changes
This section may change along with the site, its providers or the applicable rules. The last-updated date appears at the top of the page; where a change is substantial, a notice is displayed on the site.
9. Governing law and jurisdiction
This legal notice is governed by French law. In the event of a dispute, and failing an amicable settlement, jurisdiction lies with the competent French courts.
Under article L.612-1 of the French Consumer Code, a consumer may refer the matter free of charge to a consumer ombudsman with a view to an amicable settlement.
