Twisted Electrons has opened pre-orders for the FLEXFM, a hybrid groovebox first shown at Superbooth 2026: eight tracks of four-operator synthesis, an analog filter per voice, sampling and a sequencer built for performance. The full specification, price and delivery window are now on the Twisted Electrons product page.

Who it is for

The FLEXFM is aimed at musicians who want to write and perform without a computer, without giving up deep synthesis:

  • Live players: every main knob has a full-colour LED ring, and a joystick morphs the sound, the algorithm or the pattern in a single gesture.
  • Sound designers curious about FM: frequency modulation (one oscillator, the “operator”, modulates the frequency of another to create rich timbres) is paired here with analog filters, which makes it warmer and quicker to tame.
  • DAW users: over a single USB cable, the eight voices arrive on eight separate tracks, filtering included.

A word on polyphony: the FLEXFM is not eight four-operator polysynths. Each track can play up to four overlapping notes in POLY mode, or combine its four operators into one sound in MONO mode. Our guide to polyphonic, paraphonic and monophonic voice counts explains how to read that kind of spec.

Synthesis and filters

  • 30+ operator engines: classic waveforms, wavetables (series of waveforms you scan through), vocal tones, noise, drawn waves and samples.
  • Four operators per voice, linked by FM, amplitude modulation (AM) or ring modulation (RM), with oscillator sync.
  • One analog multimode filter per voice, plus two digital filter families: ORACLE, a three-dimensional space of peaks, notches and vowels, and CROQUETTE, a coloured low-pass in three flavours (PLAIN, HOT, CRISPY).
  • Four LFOs per voice, whose shape can be drawn with the joystick, plus ADSR envelopes on amplitude and filter.

Sequencer and sampling

  • 16 patterns of up to 128 steps per track, with per-track length and rate, probability, conditional steps and “tempoFlex” curves that speed a track up or slow it down against the master clock.
  • MONO, POLY (four overlapping notes), CHORD and SYNC modes; arpeggiator, swing, 8 song parts and key changes.
  • Velocity-sensitive piezo drum pad, recording from the audio input, WAV import, slicing and repitching, twelve-pad kits.

The official Twisted Electrons introduction:

How it compares

  • Elektron Digitone II (Elektron spec page, $1,149 on the maker’s site) is the reference FM groovebox: 16 tracks, 16 voices and a 128-step sequencer, but only two main outputs (multitrack goes through Overbridge software) and no sampling listed on its spec page. The FLEXFM has half the tracks, but analog filters, eight physical outputs and sampling.
  • Elektron Syntakt (Elektron spec page, $1,149) also mixes analog and digital, across 12 tracks, with a 64-step sequencer and analog filters on its analog tracks only. It leans towards drums; the FLEXFM puts FM and sampling first.

Both Elektron boxes ship today: View at Thomann · View at Thomann. The FLEXFM is still a pre-order, sold by its maker only. Its strength is the balance of synthesis depth, analog filters and separate outputs at a similar price; its weakness is that it has not shipped yet, and the timeline depends on a small manufacturer.
