Launched by Arturia in January 2019, the MicroFreak is a hybrid: a digital oscillator into an analog filter. The oscillator now offers 21 modes, from wavetables and granular synthesis to sample playback, engines from Mutable Instruments and Noise Engineering, and a vocoder.

Highlights

  • An analog state-variable filter, 12 dB per octave, low-pass, band-pass or high-pass, inspired by the SEM filter.
  • Monophonic, paraphonic or unison play, up to 4 voices.
  • A flat 25-note capacitive keyboard with polyphonic aftertouch.

The MicroFreak is a good example of paraphony, several notes through a single filter, as explained in our voice count guide. Its bigger sibling, the MiniFreak, steps up to 6 polyphonic voices. Details on Arturia’s MicroFreak page.
